Finding Bugs
You can clearly understand why and how the program failed; replicate the problem, when the Beta testing is done in our Lab.  Rather then trying to interpret an incoherent description over the phone at user’s site.
Checking performance and compatibility with specific equipment.
Having all the interesting types of instruments in-house (printer, modem computer, mouse, sound card, video card etc.)  is not cost effective.  Sending the software to someone who owns all these is the best way to test compatibility of the software.
